Things to do

Arugambay, the surf paradise of the east coast is a vibrant tourist destination. Surfing is the most obvious thing to do here, there are so many other things to do. From beach hopping, catching beautiful sunsets to exploring natural habitats of wildlife, visiting ancient ruins and temples and many more!

Whisky Point

Arugambay is one of the world’s top surfing destinations. There are several surfing spots to choose from and whiskey point is one of the main breakpoints to catch some thrilling waves that are ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. Apart from surfing, this is a perfect place for sea bathing and sunset walks along the beautifully stretched beach.

Elephant Rock

Elephant rock is another popular beginners’ surf spot in Arugam bay located at the end of the bay. This is a great place to get up and have a view of the whole area; the luscious green jungle from one side and the beautiful Indian Ocean from the other side and amazing surf in action. You can witness stunning colorful sunsets from the top of the rock and wild elephants roaming nearby.

Lahugala

Lahugala national park, one of the smallest wildlife parks on the island, is situated inland just 16km from arugambay. It consists of the Lahugala tank and topographical landscapes of evergreen forests. The park is popular for its elephants and bird watching. Over 150 elephants gather around the tank during the months of July and August. Apart from elephants, the park is also home to endemic toque macaque, sloth bear, leopard, wild bear, jackal, rusty-spotted cat, pangolin, spotted deer and many more.

Kudumbigala

Kudumbigala monastery is located on the extremity of Kumana National Park. The monastery was built in 246 BC as a refuge for the Buddhist monks who wanted to get away from the busy cities and follow their path to enlightenment.

Panama Beach

Panama is located at the furthest end of Pottuvil-Panama road. Since it’s further away and a small fishing village with a laid-back atmosphere, it’s less frequented by surfers of all levels. At Panama point, you can climb the rocks for wonderful views and from this point, the coast joins the Yala National park.

Mudhudu maha Viharaya

Muhudu maha viharaya is a Buddhist temple that was built almost 2000 years ago. It is beautifully located on the sand dunes of Pottuvil. The temple is right near the beach and currently features the remains of ancient stupas and statues.
